A day in Verona

We really loved the Hotel Monastero, with its palm trees and beautiful views of Lake Garda. This is a magical place for a holiday, and it made us want to see more of the local surroundings. We took a day trip to ancient city of Verona, which is about an hour's drive to the east of the hotel. The city is quaint and romantic, and full of interesting shops and architecture.

A highlight of the day was our visit to the Verona Arena. This is a Roman building which looks just like the Coliseum in Rome, and it must be about two thousand years old. These days, it is used for opera performances and pop concerts, but we just wandered around, soaking up the atmosphere. It was fascinating to imagine the thousands of people through the ages who have been here before us.

Gardone Riviera

Gardone Riviera is a small resort for tourists, ideally situated next to the largest lake in Italy, Lake Garda. The resort lies on the west shore of the lake and is the ideal location to be able to tour the various resorts that surround this famous lake area.

This is predominantly a tourist area, with several hotels in the surrounding area. There are a number of places to eat and drink, with ice cream parlours and cafes available for treats during those lazy afternoons soaking up the sun on the lakeside.

Only a short walk up the lakeside will bring you to Gardone Sopra, a small village with a lovely historical look and feel. This also has a number of places to eat and drink while you enjoy the picturesque surroundings.

If you enjoy exotic plant life, you may like to take the short walk from the lakeside to the Heller Garden. This is a botanic garden that was created in 1910 by Arthur Hruska. Because of the climate in this region, there is a variety of tropical plants that you may not have had the chance to see before. This would be well worth a visit in Gardone Riviera.
